About the Loft

Welcome to Loft 2 !

It's been a long time between updates.  But after 3 years I finally ran the vacuum around and took some photos so I could show you around the new Loft.

The new Loft is actually an ex-office space.   In fact when I moved in here with my new housemate Jake, we had to remove some old desks and office furniture left behind by the previous tenants.   I some shots here you will see that we have made use of some of that furniture.    The loft is now a lot fuller than it was when we moved here in February 2004.   It is a much larger space than loft 1.   Loft 2 is 130 sq metres in size, taking up a whole floor of the building.   Loft 1 was only 75 sq metres.

Loft 2 also has amazing 13 foot high ceilings.   We actually have no means of changing the lights if they go out here.   The loft is lit by enormous industrial fluorescent lights giving it a more laboritory feel, or...   it's lit up like a late night 7-Eleven.

The Loft is positioned in one of the busiest parts of the city, right alongside the Flinders Street train station.   Our neighbours are liquor stores, bars, strip clubs, sex book stores, fast food joints and a 24 hour supermarket.   This means that Loft 2 is a bit noisier than Loft 1 (which is just around the corner).   It is also difficult to heat in winter.   Our heating bill doubles in winter as we try to heat the huge spaces.   The old iron windows do very little to insulate the loft from Melbourne's icy winters.

But sometimes some of the negative aspects of living in Loft 2 are far outweighed by the convenience of living in the middle of the city and having such a huge space to play in.    Here are some photos of each of the spaces.

The bathroom...  cleaned just for this photo

Another view in the bathroom.  That heater above the door cops a workout in winter.

Another angle in the kitchen and my highly decorated fridge

This is the space I always have plans for...  but mostly it gets filled with junk

My eyes! My eyes!  This is my bedroom.   It needs a good tidy up.  I actually embarrassed by my out of control wardrobe.

This is the entrance hall into the loft.  The fire department told me that they will knock down our front door if there is a fire to get to that hose reel.

This is Jake's bedroom.  We decided the biggest boy should have the biggest room.

It kinda looks like he has no bed...  but it is hidden behind the screens in the corner.   Spooky if you ask me.

The place doesn't normally look this tidy.

NOTE:   The rest of this page relates to Loft 1 which I own, but is now leased out.

Loft 1

Why?  Where?  When?

The Loft started after I moved into this cute little apartment in the central business district of Melbourne.   The Melbourne City Council is currently arranging services and encouraging more people to take up residence in the 3000 postcode.
I move to Melbourne in July 1998 and just last year I decided I would stay here permanently and find a place to call my own.
After almost a year of searching I found this little building in a laneway on my way home from the gym one Saturday afternoon.  I came up the stairs to find a generous living space overlooking the cafe lined laneway below.   Two days later the place was mine!

The photos above were taken before I moved in and did some decorating.   In three days I had some mates from Sydney help me paint out the place in some cool bright colours.   Then came the big move and all those boxes!

So some months later now that I'm settled and almost all of the boxes are unpacked I can get started on my new project.  Bringing MelbourneLoft.com to the world.

MelbourneLoft.com serves many purposes.   It helps me stay in contact with my family and friends interstate and overseas and it is helping me to learn more about web site creation and management.

There are no rules or standards set in the Loft.   The camera will be working when I'm up and about in the Loft.  There is no schedule as to when the camera will be live and there is no telling what you might see in the Loft.    The cam image will be the last photo taken when I turned off the camera unless the camera is live.

Special events....   there will be special televised events from time to time on the Loft cam.    You will be surprised at what I plan to pass off as "entertainment" on the Loft.

The gallery below shows some of the photos taken during the renovations and the move.  It looks much better now than it did when these photos were taken.

Please don't ask me for the location of the Loft.    I won't tell you.
